Module 6 - Collaborative Learning, Social Networks
and Online Communications
As a reminder, my digital lesson involves teaching administrators and principals about using the Flipped Classroom model of instruction in regards to faculty meetings and staff training. This is a class that will be taught district-wide to administrators of all levels (PreK-12).
Collaborative Tool: Google Classroom
How the tool will be used:
Google Classroom provides a free platform for a closed online learning environment. It is available to any Google Apps for Education (GAFE) school or district. It is necessary for the district/school to have educational domain for both students and teachers. This training will utilize Google Classroom in a way that will model the expectations of the district for its use between principal-staff and teacher-students.
Through the use of Google Classroom, teachers are able to make announcements, give assignments, facilitate discussions, take up student work, create polls, and more. Classroom works in conjunction with Drive, Docs and other Google tools. Students are able to create and/or collaborate on presentations and documents and then submit them to the instructor digitally. Using this tool will, not only give the administrators experience with a tool that has been adopted district-wide, but will allow for on-demand access to information for all faculty/staff. For this training, sample videos and agendas will be shared to demonstrate possible frameworks for their faculty meetings. In addition, discussion questions can be posted to the group to encourage thoughtful reflection about the positive changes that can be made to faculty meeting time in the areas of effectiveness and time management. With the ability for all members of the Google Classroom to post, successes and needs can be shared with the group at any time.
How the tool will enhance student learning:
Using Google Classroom will allow administrators and teachers to remain in contact about important issues throughout the day and week. The ability to gain insight, ask for help or offer support to a colleague at any time is invaluable. With early access to all relevant materials, students (in this case the administrators) are able to view the information on their own time, review if necessary, and come to the meetings with opinions, questions, and comments already formulated. The meeting time can be better spent in discussion and reflection instead of sitting passively through a presentation or lecture. Active participation encourages deeper understanding.
How the success of the tool will be determined:
The success of the tool will largely be measured by the attitude of the users. It would be best to have a survey after using Google Classroom, both for training and as a tool for the new model of faculty meeting to determine if this tool was helpful or if it hindered faculty/staff communication and access to information.
Additional Information:
With Google Classroom only being available to GAFE schools/districts, it may not be available to all class members. I have included some instructional videos created for district training that can give an idea of its uses, set up and management.
